21st CENTURY LEARNING
Integrating technology into the curriculum
Lighthouse Christian School is moving forward with a powerful and cohesive vision for Christian education which provides students with the skills they need in order to be successful members of the 21st century society. Combined with a new technology focus, the LCS graduate will be well prepared for the 21st Century workforce.
The newly adopted 21st Century learning model is a long-term initiative which includes an increased investment in technology both in the classroom and with the faculty. By integrating technology into every facet of the Lighthouse curriculum, students will learn basic software concepts as well as increase their understanding of the best way to apply technology across academic disciplines. Together with more than 230 Lighthouse families, we are developing spiritually grounded and academically equipped leaders, prepared to impact the world in their chosen fields and to serve their communities.
Financial Literacy - Stewardship and Biblical principles of finance
Basic principles of financial management and stewardship are key pillars for success in today’s youth. The modern world dictates that people will have to provide more for their own future rather than relying on pension plans and Social Security. Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year Lighthouse students will participate in a financial literacy course so they will understand the basics of investing, the dangers of debt, and how to plan for their future, using Biblical principles of finance. Parents will also have the opportunity to benefit from workshops led by seasoned industry professionals. Some course highlights will include:
- Understanding money management for God’s glory
- Consumption vs. savings vs. investing
- Managing debt and finances while being Godly stewards and prudent risk takers
- Risk and return and importance of beating inflation
- Types of investments and the importance of diversification to control risk
- Building a portfolio/picking stocks and investments
- Practices to avoid
Beyond the coursework, an investment club will also be offered. Elementary students will also be in the loop, learning some financial basics through a Junior Achievement-inspired program. This introduction will help build strong stewards of God’s resources at an early age – allowing students to apply their critical thinking, math, and problem solving skills to real world situations.
The program is being developed by Den Trittin, Lighthouse Board Chairman, who recently retired from Russell Investments after a 26 year career. Den served as an analyst, director of research and strategy, and portfolio manager of US equities.
