SCHOOL HISTORY
Beginnings
Lighthouse Christian School was founded as an independent, interdenominational school in 1994 by a group of parents led by a vision. Under the direction of a parent-run Board of Directors, Lighthouse strives to fulfill its’ Mission Statement of existing “to glorify God by providing quality, Christ-centered education that will nurture students to become spiritually minded, academically versed, socially balanced, and equipped to make a positive impact in their community to the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Early years
The seeds of Lighthouse began in the prayers of several teachers. Within months, an exploratory parent meeting was held and the foundation of Lighthouse was laid. Under God’s constant guidance this pioneer group witnessed one miracle after another. Blessed with the tremendous support of local churches (three of which provided classroom space), and a wonderful staff, Lighthouse opened its doors in the fall of 1994 to 90 students in grades K – 8.
The first four years brought blessings in many forms, including new families and students, a growing staff of excellent teachers, and a superb administrator. But, there were many challenges in operating the school out of four locations (three churches and an office). A large part of the original vision was to house Lighthouse on its own campus. Because of the generosity of a very special couple who were willing to purchase and lease property for school use, this vision became reality.
A time of growth
In the fall of 1998, classes for grades 1 – 8 and the administrative offices opened on the new 27-acre campus on 36th Street NW and Point Fosdick Drive NW. Through a wonderful gift in 2000, LCS became the title-holder of the campus property. The addition of two modular buildings in 2001 allowed for continued growth and for the Kindergarten classes to meet on campus. A subsequent capital campaign provided for a state-of-the-art 66,000 square foot facility which houses 33 classrooms, as well as dedicated computer and science labs, art and music rooms. Lighthouse is proud to offer a strong K-8 academic program, helping students to shine God’s light in the Gig Harbor community.
